Tutoring is a great way to build connections and help prepare our new immigrants to successfully and confidently face life’s daily challenges in their neighborhoods, schools, work settings, at medical appointments, or when food shopping. Our tutors have provided mothers with conversational English sessions through home visits and group coffee hours, and children of all ages with homework assistance and reading partnerships. Now, due to Covid-19 restrictions, tutors have shifted to remote conversation and instruction, a change that has merely brought to light the commitment of volunteers and families to carry on despite the challenges posed by distance learning. Progress has been impressive. Some mothers are studying for the citizenship exam, some children have graduated high school, and others have begun college. What better way to help change a life?
